The mountain lakes of Val Tartano

The hike to the Porcile Lakes, in Val Tartano and more precisely in Val Lunga, is a simple yet rewarding itinerary in the heart of the Orobie Alps of Valtellina. In about two hours of walking, you reach three splendid glacial lakes arranged in terraces, set among alpine meadows and rocks. Their name comes from the local dialect word purscil, meaning “purity”: a reference to the clarity of the waters and the particular mineral composition of the surrounding rocks.

The hike follows well-marked mountain trails; there are some exposed passages and stretches with incline, but the route never presents major difficulties.

PROGRAMMA

Climbing up Val Tartano, above Morbegno, you are immersed in a typical alpine landscape made of dense forests, rushing streams, and autumn colors that glow in countless shades. We are in the heart of the Orobic Alps, within the Orobie Valtellinesi Regional Park.

After passing through the village of Tartano, you reach the end of Val Lunga, where the car can be parked along the stream and the hike begins.

The trail initially climbs among shady fir trees before opening up to wide high-altitude pastures, dominated by the silhouette of Monte Cadelle (2,483 m). The final stretch winds between rocks, meadows, and small bushes of delicious blueberries, gradually leading to the three Porcile Lakes. Set on natural terraces between 2,000 and 2,100 meters, their brilliant turquoise waters and surrounding alpine meadows create a striking and authentic scene, far from the crowds.

The route forms a loop, connecting the lakes and then descending into the valley toward Rifugio Il Pirata, a welcoming stop for some well-deserved refreshment before returning.
